UMB has closed The ROAR Center, which provided services to victims of gun violence in Baltimore. The University of Maryland, Baltimore has closed a crime victim services center, The ROAR Center, which provided legal help, counseling and other services to victims of violent crime. The university informed all seven staffers that they would lose their jobs after completing at-home assignments. The center's funding under the federal Victims of Crime Act was cut by over a third from the last fiscal year to the current one. Most of the duties of the ROAR center will now be transferred to the EMBRACE Initiative, another entity under the umbrella of the UMB provost’s office, which aims to address systemic inequality. Lydia Watts, the center’s founding executive director, said the center has served hundreds of victims of nonfatal gunshot wounds and family members of homicide victims.
