ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaims top spot in China's rich list, thanks to his firm's AI push
BEIJING (AP) — ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaimed the top spot on a list of China's richest people, driven by his company's push into artificial intelligence. The rankings released by ZDance founder, Zhang Yiming, has topped the list of China's richest people with $100 billion, up 43% due to his company's push into artificial intelligence. The Hurun Research Institute, which has published the list annually since 1999, found a record 1,529 people with more than 5 billion yuan ($750 million) worth over $750 million, up 6.6% from last year. The institute also found that the number of billionaires based on their net worth in U.S. dollars rose to 1,176, up 155 people, up 176 more than the U.K. Zhang's company, ByteDance, is also the parent company of popular short-video platforms Douyin and TikTok. The rankings reflected that while high-tech sectors were rising, consumer and real estate sectors were under pressure. Bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan fell to second place with $61 billion, down 23%, while Robin Zeng, chairman of CATL, came third. Despite this, not a single mainland property developer remained in the Top 100.
