Study Eels Collected On Special Ladder At Eden Mill Dam
Residents of all ages can sign up now to help extract eels, weigh them and collect data Tuesday morning with park naturalists. A special ladder was installed at the Eden Mill Dam in 2025 to increase the American eel population in Deer Creek beyond the dam. The ladder was designed to help the eels navigate up and over the dam to continue swimming. The technical design incorporated site‑specific hydrology, engineering requirements and eel biology to ensure safe passage. The project was led by the U.S. Geological Survey and project partners including MDNR, USFWS and the Maryland Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office. All eels captured will be released after being counted, although some may be saved for education or outreach, or additional study.
