Collington Square Opens STEM Center in East Baltimore

A Baltimore police partnership just brought a new STEM lab to an East Baltimore elementary school. Collington Square Elementary/Middle School in East Baltimore has opened a STEM Center at its elementary school, giving students hands-on math and science activities instead of just textbooks. The center was part of a partnership between the Johns Hopkins Police Department and Collington Square, as part of their Police Athletic/Activities League partnership. The university provided financial and logistical support for the STEM center, which was designed to strengthen critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. The space was named for Cal Ripken, Sr. who was a Baltimore Orioles player, scout, coach and manager. Collington is one of several Baltimore-area schools to receive a Ripken-backed STEM center in recent years.
