Solar Eclipse Draws Warning From Baltimore County Schools

Baltimore County schools won't close early for the solar eclipse. The eclipse overlaps with normal dismissal, but there's a safety warning. Baltimore County Schools (BCPS) has issued a warning about the dangers of looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse, which can cause permanent damage to the eyes. All school dismissals will continue, with BCPS urging families to check their eclipse-viewing glasses for compatibility with all standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISP). The American Astronomical Society provided a list of companies known to conform to ISO standards. The moon will cover about 88 percent of the sun in Baltimore County, but there will still be some light.

Classes will continue on their normal schedules. All BCPS school dismissals overlap with some part of the eclipse, drawing a warning from leaders. "Never look directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse," BCPS said in a Wednesday community letter verified by Patch. "It is dangerous to look directly at the sun and it can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Do not look at the sun through sunglasses, telescope, or binoculars."

BCPS also encouraged families to check that their eclipse-viewing glasses conform to all standards from the International Organization for Standardization. There have been reports of counterfeit glasses, so the American Astronomical Society provided this list of companies known to conform to ISO standards.
