Authorities at the Port of Baltimore in the United States announced on Monday that they had removed some of the debris from a bridge that collapsed after colliding with a container ship, killing six people, and opened a temporary passageway.

The purpose of the initiative is to allow vessels deemed “essential” to operations at terminals in Maryland (eastern U.S.) to sail.

In a statement, U.S. federal, Maryland and Baltimore city officials said the first step was toward normalizing maritime traffic at one of the nation’s major ports.

Initially, it will be closed to large ships and will be used primarily for vessels “engaging in port and relief operations.”

Coast Guard spokeswoman Carmen Caber told AFP that initially “it will not be wide enough for a cargo ship to pass,” and there is no timeline for the progress of construction work to normalize maritime traffic. He said no.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, used by tens of thousands of vehicles every day, collapsed into the Patapsco River like a tower in the sand on March 26 after a propulsion problem caused a 300-meter-long container ship to collide with it.

Six Latin American workers lost their lives while repairing holes in the bridge. The remaining two people may be rescued. From that moment on, the entrance to the Port of Baltimore was closed.

The collapsed infrastructure was 2.6km long and spanned four lanes.

The Port of Baltimore is a major port on the East Coast of the United States and is the nation’s ninth most important port in terms of both the foreign cargo it handles and the amount of trade that passes through its facilities.

The White House reported Monday that President Joe Biden, who is seeking re-election, will visit the area on Friday.
