Ahead of Rome tipoff, basketball powerhouse Villanova embraces 'Pope Leo effect'
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) — At Villanova University, all roads — or at least many of them — seem to lead to Rome, thanks to famed alumnus Pope Leo XIV and the school's growing ties to the Vatican. Even Villanova University is embracing the 'Pope Leo effect' as its basketball program and ties to the Vatican are becoming more prominent. The alumnus, Pope Leo XIV, graduated from Villanova with a degree in mathematics in 1977 and belongs to the Augustinians, the religious order that founded the university in 1842. Villanova's president, the Rev. Peter Donohue, attributed the school's growing profile to the pope's alma mater's success. The school saw applications increase by more than 10% during the first admissions cycle after the pope’s 2025 election. The men’S and women’’s basketball teams will open the season in Rome with a Catholic university matchup, playing Notre Dame 6 miles from the Vatican.
