Within a few hours th In southern Chile, locals are campaigning to protect oceans that have been heavily impacted by intensive salmon farming. The Guaitecas Archipelago, a remote area that is home to numerous salmon farms, is home where hundreds of tons of chemicals and antibiotics are discharged into the sea. At least 313 salmon farms were authorized in the archipelago alone, according to Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service. Critics argue that salmon farms have severely damaged multiple marine areas, leaving parts of the seabed with oxygen levels so low that other forms of life struggle to survive. Despite opposition, there is strong support for the salmon industry as it generates many jobs. The United States accounts for 40% of Chile‘s salmon exports ($6 billion), followed by Japan with 17% and Brazil with over $1 billion.
