Jorge Mateo has entered the concussion protocol after an incident where the Baltimore Orioles second baseman was accidentally struck in the helmet by teammate Cedric Mullins’ bat.

During their on-deck preparation for the bottom of the fourth inning, Mateo leaned down to pick up a piece of equipment as Mullins was taking swings and the latter’s bat hit Mateo’s head.

Following the accident, Mateo was removed from the game and did not bat in the intended inning.

“As I was getting ready for my at-bat with some standard stretches, Jorge ended up behind me without my noticing, leading to the mishap,” Mullins explained, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Mullins expressed that Mateo seemed to be “doing OK” after seeing him later in the clubhouse kitchen.

The Orioles faced the Tampa Bay Rays that day, enduring a close 4-3 defeat.

Post-game, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde informed the press that Mateo would undergo additional medical tests.

“We are monitoring the situation and awaiting further results. We hope to know more about his condition by tomorrow,” said Hyde.

Major League Baseball has a seven-day injured list specifically for players with concussion symptoms.

Mateo, who had earlier hit an infield single in the game, was replaced by Ramón Urías who pinch-hit for him in the fourth inning. Jordan Westburg took over at second base after Hyde adjusted the line-up following Urías’ substitution to third base.

Mateo, 28, has been a steady presence for the Orioles, posting a batting line of .246/.294/.447 with 12 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 13 RBIs, 19 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases this season.

It remains uncertain if Mateo will be sidelined for upcoming Orioles games due to the incident.
