These charges could lead to years in prison and hinder their efforts to naturalize. One immigrant, José Antonio Bañuelos-Díaz, 42, applied for citizenship in 2025 after living in the country for 40 years and spending his entire adult life as a legal permanent resident. The federal government alleges that he improperly claimed to be a citizen in 2007 when registering to vote, then lied about it on his immigration paperwork. Most of the individuals charged in California have lived in the US for at least five years and could face deportation if they lied on their citizenship application. The Justice Department announced six people would be charged with voting as a noncitizen, a misdemeanor, and 22 others were facing a combination of felony charges including lying on their naturalization application during interviews or on voter registration forms. The cases are part of a Trump administration effort to identify noncitizens before the midterm elections.
