Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) customers voiced concerns about rising utility bills and household expenses during a virtual public hearing as the utility seeks approval for a $156 million annual rate increase. The Maryland Public Service Commission held the first of three virtual hearings on the proposal, which would add an average of $8 a month to customers' electric bills if approved. The increase is separate from another planned increase linked to Baltimore's conduit system, which will add a $9 monthly surcharge starting in the new year. Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen among those testifying, urged the commission to consider the financial strain facing residents. BGE acknowledged the financial pressures customers are facing and warned that delaying necessary maintenance and infrastructure work could lead to more outages and higher costs in the future. The next virtual public meeting is scheduled for Nov. 4.
