A 2021 clip of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg discussing “racist” highway designs is being shared online as if it shows his response to the March 2024 bridge collapse in Baltimore.

Afterward, a 28-second video surfaced on social media showing Buttigieg standing before a podium in the White House discussing the architecture of highway bridges, saying: “If an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly Black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach, or would have been, in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices.”

He continues: “I don’t think we have anything to lose by confronting that simple reality and I think we have everything to gain by acknowledging it and then dealing with it, which is why the reconnecting communities, that billion dollars, is something we want to get to work right away.”

The video surfaced on Facebook with text across it that reads: “PETE BUTTIGEIG SAYS FRANCIS SCOTT KEY BRIDGE WAS RACIST.”

The video is not recent, however, and does not show Buttigieg’s remarks after Tuesday’s Baltimore bridge collapse.

When speaking to the press after the bridge collapse on March 26 (timestamp 5:58 to 14:08), Buttigieg did not reference racism as a cause of the collision and mentioned emergency operations, the impacts of the collapse, and dealing with supply chain issues as a result of the collapse.

Miscaptioned. A video of Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg discussing “racist” architectural highway designs was filmed in 2021, not after the collapse of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.
