EPA response to 2023 Ohio derailment will be investigated
The Environmental Protection Agency's response to the disastrous 2023 East Palestine train derailment will be investigated after local residents of the small town on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to investigate its response to the 2023 East Palestine train derailment in Ohio. Local residents and Vice President JD Vance pushed for the review, which will assess the agency's response to this disaster and subsequent health and environmental concerns. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the move to burn five rail cars was unnecessary, but at the time, officials feared it could cause more harm. The investigation will determine whether the EPA fulfilled its responsibilities and whether it had “sufficient data’s public communications” to assure residents of East Palestine that no toxic levels of chemicals remained in the community. Since the derailment, over 80 people in the area have developed cancer, although it is difficult to prove that every illness is directly linked to the derailration.
