SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Following the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, Western Mass News got answers on how the closure of this major port could affect the auto industry locally and beyond.

We spoke with Gary Rome of Gary Rome Hyundai in Holyoke, and he told us that if one thing is for sure, it’s that the collapse will cause some major delays as distributors reroute their shipments to different ports.

The port of Baltimore, Maryland is the number one automobile port in the entire U.S., and with Tuesday morning’s cargo ship crash closing down the port for the foreseeable future, we got answers on how this could affect car dealerships in our area.

Rome told us that luckily the bridge collapse won’t directly impact Hyundai or Kia since they use the port in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, several other manufacturers who do go through Baltimore will face some big challenges.

Such as Dodge, Chrysler, Mercedes, Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen

Rome explained, “It’s going to create some havoc, but they’ll figure out a way to redirect the vehicles and get them delivered so it will impact us because there will be more traffic at the ports that we use.”

Rome claimed that about 873 thousand cars go through that port every year. So, it’s inevitable that the closure of this port will initially cause some major backlog as they figure out the logistics.

“It’s going to take them a while to figure out the logistics of how they are going to redirect all of these cars and all of these deliveries and it’s not going to be a short-term fix, they’re going to have to figure out a long term fix,” he said.

Gary Rome told us that anyone ordering a car right now might have to wait an extra two to four weeks for it to come in. However, despite all of these delays, he doesn’t anticipate an increase in the price of vehicles.
